STUDY OF THE EVALUATION OF THE POWER STATIONS OF FOIX AND SANT ADRIÀ

10/2016

We have been commissioned by ENDESA to carry out the evaluation of the landmark chimneys of the power stations of Foix and Sant Adrià.
In the case of the power station of Foix, it is a reinforced concrete chimney. It is 175m high and the outer diameter varies from 6.3m on the top until 13.0m on the base. The foundation has a diameter of approximately 19.0m.
This power station has been operated since its connection to the electricity network in 1979, until it was taken out of operation in Jun 2015. Currently its maintenance and reutilization is being estimated in order to turn it into Industrial Heritage.
On the other hand, the power station of Sant Adriá is located on the left Besòs river bank, next to the city of Barcelona. It consisted of three group of steam turbogenerators of 350 MW each one, which were operated from 1973 until 2011. Initially the fuel used was fuel-oil. Later on in the eighties the groups I and II were modified in order to make possible the use of natural gas.
Since the available space was limited, the chimneys were conceived to be simply supported on the boilers. The overall height of the building was 180m. Nevertheless, it was extended later to 200m by means of a steel extension.
Currently this power station is out of service and only the three 200m couples chimney-boiler and the industrial plant that accommodates the turbines remain standing. The measures of the latter are 170m long, 34m wide and 30m high.
The City Council of Sant Adrià de Besòs has recently declared the three chimneys Property of Local Cultural Interest.
This commission will be carried out in Fhecor by the Knowledge Management and Materials Science Department.
