Last April 8, the new line 3 of Metro Bilbao started operating with its new seven stations, including Casco Viejo station. The work of Fhecor included the design and supervision of the demolition of the old station and the construction of the new one.
The new Casco Viejo station works as an interchange station in Bilbao city center providing underground access to line 1 as well as first-floor access to the new line 3 through a spacious lobby.
One of the key aspects of the design for the new station was the need of considering the future building which is planned to be built on top of the station. This requires that the roof beams have been already designed to future relevant loads. Another challenge of the project was the client's requirement of a first-floor spacious lobby to allow the free circulation of passengers. This condition was fulfilled by substituting a bearing wall with a Vierendeel steel beam, which supports some roof beams.
