THE STRUCTURAL STRENGTHENING OF THE ST. PRUDENCIO CHURCH IS COMPLETED

10/2017

During these weeks, the structural rehabilitation of the St. Prudencio Church in Talavera de la Reina, Spain, has been completed. The work of FHECOR Consulting Engineers has been focused on the evaluation of the building structural safety and on the development of strengthening interventions to decrease its structural vulnerability. The nave columns suffered horizontal displacement and it is well-know that spreading movements of supports may lead to the collapse of the structure. For this reason, the main retrofitting action consisted in enlarging the positive backing effect on the building’s structural safety by increasing the height and the number of stiffeners located on the extrados vault.

Furthermore, a maintenance plan has been defined. It cares the general movements of the structure and its main elements, as well as the existing cracks. It also includes corrective measures that should be applied in case the admissible range of displacements were exceeded. The opening of the church to the public is planned before the end of the year.
