RETROFITTING WORKS FOR THE SANANA BRICK MASONRY ARCH BRIDGE

06/2018

The Sanana brick masonry arch bridge is part of ADIF conventional line Zaragoza– Lerida – Barcelona. This masonry bridge is composed of three 14 m vaulted spans. The bridge is undergoing major retrofitting works following a project prepared by FHECOR in 2015.

Important damages were observed back in 2014 while performing a main inspection of the bridge. Longitudinal cracks in vaults were considered the most important together with spandrel walls relative transverse displacement. These cracks were due to the ballast layer height increase, the loss of cohesion of the vaults filling and the stresses caused by trains in the curved bridge.

The intervention comprises the nailing of the vaults and spandrel walls by means of steel bars anchored using pattress plates in the brick elements. Preexisting bars in poor condition are planned to be removed. Vault cracks are being injected. Repairs will continue with general cleaning and brick repointing.
