PLACING OPERATION OF THE LARGEST OFFSHORE WIND FARM SUBSTATION

11/2018

FHECOR Consulting Engineers has collaborated with SCOTTISHPOWER RENEWABLES (part of the IBERDROLA Group) in the monitoring (by means of a wireless system involving 32 vibrating wire strain gauges acquired from GEOKON) of the lifting elements during the placing operation of the East Anglia ONE offshore substation. FHECOR has also participated in the interpretation of the monitoring results.
The main purpose of the monitoring network designed by FHECOR has been to evaluate the possible occurrence of plastic strains in the platform lifting elements, during the lifting operation from its initial positions on the barge, to its final location on the jacket foundation. The lifting elements must be reusable to dismantle the platform once its service life is completed.
Thanks to its 102 wind turbines and an installed power capacity of 714 MW, East Anglia ONE will provide clean energy to nearly 600,000 British homes when it starts operations in 2020.
At FHECOR Consulting Engineers, we are pleased to be involved, even if modestly, in this project, described by its manufacturer as the largest alternating current offshore substation ever built, in what will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world.
