New satellite building at Barcelona airport

The V-shaped Satellite Terminal at Barcelona Airport is set in front of the existing T1 Terminal and has the current control tower to one side. The shape and placement of the new terminal was so designed as to optimize the number of aircraft received as established by AENA (Spanish Airports Authorities). It shall free up the air field so allowing the necessary taxiing and parking of aircraft in the apron and as far away as possible from the Control Tower.
The terminal has the following floor levels:
• Basement PS1, where the main service areas may be found along with the People Mover station which connects up with the existing T1 Terminal.
• Floors P00 and P10, which are the main Airport areas (Passport control, boarding gate access, baggage collection and commercial areas).
• Mezzanine floors P20, P30 and P40, where the VIP areas and installations may be found.
The satellite building has a 9X9m grid layout which adapts to the geometry of the curved edges of the slabs and the openings which are necessary for the transit of installations.
Following on from the criteria established in the construction of Terminal T1, a project also fulfilled by Fhecor Ingenieros Consultores, the structure considered for levels P00 and P10 in the Satellite Building, mainly has circular concrete columns supports and 0.45m deep reinforced concrete slabs. The structure has sufficient stiffness as the result of the sum of all the columns and stair and lift wells, to withstand seismic actions.
From level P10 the columns are steel cylinders upon which the upper level slabs rest (P20, P30 y P40). These are 0.12m deep composite slabs which are set upon a system of steel braces and beams which form frames in conjunction with the columns so as to withstand the seismic actions along with the vertical cores.
A direct solid slab foundation has been employed as deemed to be the best solution to bear the sub-pressure caused by a relatively high water table. In addition, the foundation slab is the best option to spread the tensile loads to the ground as is the case for the soil conditions where the Satellite Building is located.
The roof is curved in shape, similar to that of the aircraft docking area in Terminal 1. Special care has been taken care in the design of the curved areas at the edges of the building so as to guarantee the best possible visibility of the aircraft
